Why not add 6mm toughened glass to the top of the footstool to act as a “tray” for drinks, a lamp or a vase? The safety glass can either slot within the piping of a flat-topped piece, or simply sit in the centre of a fully upholstered piece.

This glass topped side table is upholstered in James Brindley Colderidge and Byron blue with navy velvet piping and is 20inches high so can be positioned to the side of a sofa at the perfect height for a lamp, and drinks. These pieces can be made to any height or shape, and you can coordinate the colour scheme of your existing furnishings too.
